STEALING FIRE

Stealing Fire explores the Greek mythology of Prometheus through aerial and acrobatic arts. It follows Prometheus as she battles titans, creates mankind, and, of course, steals fire from the gods. Other well known legends populate the show, such as Atlas, Hercules, and Pandora as their stories weave together around the protagonist through dynamic aerial dance.

Aside from the obvious addition of aerial silks and trapezes, Stealing Fire modernizes the well-known Greek mythology by ignoring traditional genders. The leading character, Prometheus, is now female along with her sister Epimetheus, while Athena is now the god of wisdom and military victory. Furthermore, Stealing Fire dares to humanize the immortal, as evident in pieces such as “The Weight of the World” where Atlas struggles to accept her entrapment and “Prometheus & Io” where two victims of Zeus’s anger find solace in an exchange of mournful tales. Hercules is arrogant, Hope is fearful, Prometheus is sympathetic. The story outline is the same, but the characters are more complex.

Stealing Fire promises to leave its audience thunderstruck and ablaze with excitement.

Tickets are available at the Union Station Box Office. https://boxoffice.unionstation.org/shows/stealing%20fire/events

Tickets are $20 for advanced general admission, $25 for at-the-door general admission and $10 for children 7 & under.

Beginner Straps w/ Aaron Koz

This workshop will focus on the fundamental techniques for safe and effective training of aerial straps, though most exercises will greatly increase your power and control on other apparatus. We will warm up our shoulders and core using a set of exercises designed to pre-habilitate and strengthen the shoulders. The fundamental skills students will cover are static positions (meathook, inverted straddle, nutcracker, croc, support, flag, and side balance). The end of the workshop will focus on 2 and 1-arm spinning using the dynamic technique of flares to invert to different positions.

This workshop will be beneficial for first timers and aerial artists who work on other apparatus.

Prerequisites: 2 arm inversions of any kind (straddle-up, tuck-up, pike-up) 1-arm hangs with engaged shoulder for 15 seconds, and 30 second wall handstand or 1-minute plank.

Cost: $60

Inversion Clinic w/ Aaron Koz

In collaboration with Jennifer Freeman, PT (practicing and research faculty at Mercer University in Atlanta) this workshop focuses on safe progressions to go from the ground to the air, and from inverting on two to one arm, with a movement screen, a investigation into good body mechanics as well as different functional training tools, exercises and techniques to get your butt over your head.

This clinic will include both teaching cues and training tools beneficial for anyone from a beginner wishing to deepen their understanding to coaches interested in learning how to recognize when a student is displaying signs of potential movement dysfunction.

Prerequisites: Anyone is welcome as it is primarily a theory-based workshop (and anyone can watch and learn), though it is strongly encouraged attendees have two arm inversions with straight arms (or at least inversions of any kind).

Acrobatics & Partner Acro Workshop w/Guest Artist Sellam Ouahabi

The Acrobatics and Partner Acro workshop focuses on the fundamentals of circus acrobatics. Students explore traditional circus tumbling technique, building strength and flexibility, while progressing in tumbling skill levels. The workshop will focus on floor acrobatics, with an introduction to human pyramids, mini-trampoline and adagio. Workshop time alternates between full-group activities, and small-group skill building. During partner acro instruction, class participants pair off and learn how to build trust and confidence as they explore ‘basing’ and ‘flying’. Please keep in mind that partner acro technique often involves significant height from the ground, and may involve use of a body harness for spotting. This is a good class to increase your knowledge of safety-first in circus.
